Rattan caning furniture can be traced back as far as the 2nd century in China and India, with it then becoming fashionable in the 17th century in Europe and England. Nowadays we see high quantities of antique pieces where the caning is starting to snap and fray due to age and the brittle nature of aged cane.

Caning forms a very strong and tight weave, intricate and beautiful to look at and has the ability to last for many years. The process involves a lot of patience and skill to weave the strands into a variety of weaving patterns, with the most popular being the five strand weave shown beyond.
